If you're not into going through all that hanging weights from your pedals nonsense, a quick sanity check would be to pair it with a buddy's Garmin or somesuch and do a calibration. Borrow a computer that will give you a torque reading and follow the directions here and see what's what and contact Saris about an RMA number if your PT is off kilter. The one way to tell for sure if yours is going bad and you need to replace it or have it refurb'd is to do a stomp test. Then they got weird on me - high one day, low the next, calibrating was all over the place (470 - 590, ideal is 512).

For a while it'll read consistently high, which is fine so long as you set your CP off of the Powertap and just use that. I've had problems with Powertaps going bad.
